Kiev lost some 13,500 troops in its failed attempt to defend Konstaninovka, Moscow\u2019s operations chief has said<\/strong><\/p>\n

Kostantinovka was Ukraine\u2019s \u201cmost fortified\u201d<\/em> stronghold, guarded by some 15,500 troops, most of whom have been eliminated during the Russian operation to capture the city, Colonel General Sergey Rudskoy has said.<\/p>\n

During a briefing on Saturday, Rudskoy, who is the head of operations at the Russian General Staff, said that throughout several weeks of intense fighting for the strategic city, the Ukrainian military lost around 13,500 troops, 14 tanks, 283 armored fighting vehicles, 1,400 cars, 200 field artillery guns and eight multiple rocket launch systems.<\/p>\n

Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov briefed President Vladimir Putin<\/a> about the liberation of Konstantinovka in Russia\u2019s Donetsk People\u2019s Republic when the commander-in-chief visited an auxiliary command post on Friday.<\/p>\n

Why is Konstantinovka important?<\/h2>\n

The general described Konstantinovka as \u201ca major industrial and logistics hub, which is the key to the last remaining stronghold of the Kiev regime in Donbass \u2013 the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk agglomeration.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

It had a population of some 78,000 before the escalation between Moscow and Kiev in February 2022, and was a key center of glass-making and metallurgy, he added.
<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cMost fortified\u201d<\/em> link in Ukraine\u2019s defense belt<\/h2>\n

The government in Kiev, which understood the strategic value of Konstantinovka, had started creating an extensive defense system in and around the city back in 2014, Rudskoy noted.
<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOverall, Konstantinovka was the most fortified and echeloned area in the Ukrainian military\u2019s defense belt,\u201d<\/em> he stressed.<\/p>\n

The fortifications around the city consisted of two defense lines, which included more than 150 km of trenches and anti-tank ditches with three rows of artificial obstacles and mine fields, according to the general.<\/p>\n

Inside Konstantinovka itself, Kiev\u2019s troops prepared more than 80 obstacle areas and over 50 fortified defense hubs, located at a train station, a technical college, 12 school buildings, 25 kindergartens and ten factories, he said.<\/p>\n

The city had been guarded by 45 Ukrainian battalions, equipped with various Western-supplied arms, including heavy weaponry, Rudskoy added.<\/p>\n

How did the Russians capture the stronghold?
<\/em><\/h2>\n

\u201cDespite all the measures taken by the Ukrainian military\u2019s command, the Ukrainian units failed to hold on to the city under pressure from the Russian troops,\u201d<\/em> the operation\u2019s chief stressed.<\/p>\n

During the offensive, the Russian assault units encircled Kostiantinovka from the flanks and secured fire control of the main supply routes, Rudskoy said. \u201cThis effectively isolated the enemy garrison within the city,\u201d<\/em> he added.<\/p>\n

After that, the Russian military exploited the supply and rotation difficulties experienced by the Ukrainians to accelerate its advance within the city and \u201ccompletely captured Kostiantnovka,\u201d<\/em> the general said.<\/p>\n

Kiev\u2019s failed attempt to reassure Western backers<\/h2>\n

According to Rudskoy, the Ukrainian high command \u201cdid not spare the lives of the Ukrainian soldiers, ordering them to hold the defense [in Konstantinovka] until the end.\u201d<\/em>

\u201cBy doing so, the Kiev regime tried to convince its Western curators that the Ukrainian troops are capable of stopping the advance of the Russian army,\u201d<\/em> he stressed.

\u201cDonbass will be liberated\u201d<\/em><\/h2>\n

The Russian military is continuing to close in on the Kramatorsk-Slavyansk region from several sides. It is the last populated Ukrainian-held area in the DPR, Rudskoy said.<\/p>\n
