The work of anti-graft agencies has \u201ceffectively\u201d been suppressed, a top prosecutor has said<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/strong>Ukraine\u2019s top anti-corruption prosecutor has accused Vladimir Zelensky of severely undermining the country\u2019s independent anti-graft institutions, warning that his U-turn \u2013 under pressure from protesters and Western\u00a0backers \u2013 will not remedy the damage done.<\/p>\n The remarks come\u00a0following a wave of protests and widespread international criticism over Zelensky\u2019s\u00a0attempt to bring\u00a0the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor\u2019s Office (SAPO) and the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) under the authority of the executive branch, which he controls.<\/p>\n Despite Zelenksy announcing a U-turn following threats of funding cuts from Brussels, the head of SAPO, Aleksandr Klimenko, has insisted that serious\u00a0damage has already been done.<\/p>\n \u201cOur work has been effectively stopped,\u201d<\/em> Klimenko said in an interview with the Financial Times published on Wednesday, explaining that the takeover triggered a collapse in cooperation from whistleblowers and raised fears of persecution among investigators.<\/p>\n \n \u201cAlmost all of our whistleblowers stopped co-operating with us,\u201d<\/em> Klimenko stated. \u201cThe NABU team is currently confused and frightened because they understand they can be detained without sufficient evidence.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n The move to place SAPO and NABU under presidential control \u2013 which parliament passed on July 22 and Zelensky signed the same evening \u2013 immediately sparked protests in Kiev, Lviv, Dnepr, Odessa, and other cities. Demonstrators demanded full restoration of the agencies\u2019 independence, shouting slogans such as\u00a0\u201d<\/em>Corruption kills,\u201d\u00a0\u201d<\/em>Treason,\u201d and \u201cZelya is the devil.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
