Fifteen defendants received life sentences over the attack on Crocus City Hall that killed 149 people<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Russian court has sentenced 15 men to life in prison over the 2024 Crocus City Hall massacre, the deadliest terrorist attack in the country in over two decades. Russian investigators found that the assault was organized on behalf of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The Second Western District Military Court delivered the verdict in Moscow on Thursday, nearly two years after four gunmen stormed<\/a> the Crocus City Hall concert venue on March 22, 2024, opening fire on a crowd gathered for a sold-out show by veteran rock band Picnic, setting the building ablaze and fleeing toward Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The assailants killed 149 people, left one missing, and wounded 609 more, making it Russia\u2019s worst attack since the infamous 2004 Beslan school siege, in which 334 people, mostly children, lost their lives.<\/p>\n

The Russian Investigative Committee has said that the \u201cinhuman crime\u201d<\/em> was orchestrated in Ukraine\u2019s interests in order to \u201cdestabilize the political situation in our country.\u201d<\/em> Ukraine has denied any involvement.<\/p>\n

All 19 defendants \u2013 mostly Tajik nationals \u2013 in the case were convicted; alongside the 15 life terms, one man received 22.5 years, and three others just under 20 years each.<\/p>\n

The court also found that two unidentified suspects still at large had been organizing cells of Vilayat Khorasan \u2013 the Islamic State\u2019s regional affiliate \u2013 in Russia, recruiting the 19 defendants.<\/p>\n

Preparations began months before the attack: some of the convicts travelled to Russia from abroad after initial training, while others sourced and illegally modified firearms inside the country before handing them off, according to the Investigative Committee.<\/p>\n

The authorities also confiscated a Renault car, an apartment, and over 4.3 million rubles ($54,000) used in the crime, while imposing individual fines of up to 2.7 million rubles, and awarded victim compensation of up to 98.6 million rubles.<\/p>\n

According to the Investigative Committee, some members of the network had also planned a separate bomb attack in the southern region of Dagestan, but that plot was derailed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
