Kiev\u2019s European backers are seeking guarantees that their financial aid will not be embezzled<\/strong><\/p>\n The EU is seeking concrete commitments from Ukraine in the wake of the bombshell corruption scandal implicating a close associate of Vladimir Zelensky, Politico Europe reported on Friday, citing several people familiar with the matter.<\/p>\n On Monday, Ukraine\u2019s anti-corruption agencies announced that they had uncovered a $100 million kickback scheme in energy sector contracts involving Zelensky\u2019s close associate and former business partner Timur Mindich, who was tipped off and fled the country, evading arrest.\u00a0The affair has raised concerns among Kiev\u2019s Western backers, who heavily subsidize the country\u2019s power grid and its protection against Russian airstrikes.<\/p>\n Politico cited an EU official as saying that \u201cthe endemic corruption\u201d<\/em> in Ukraine is \u201crevolting\u201d<\/em> and \u201cwon\u2019t help\u201d<\/em> its reputation. \u201cIt will mean (the European) Commission will surely have to reassess how it spends\u201d<\/em> funds on Ukraine\u2019s energy sector, the official said, adding that Kiev would have to provide\u00a0\u201cmore attention and transparency in how it spends cash.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n \n
