Armenia expects closer security ties and economic benefits from Britain<\/strong><\/p>\n Russia\u2019s CSTO ally Armenia has established a \u201cstrategic partnership\u201d<\/em> with the United Kingdom, a country Moscow views as hostile. Yerevan and London sealed the deal during an intergovernmental meeting on Monday, according to a joint communique.<\/p>\n The announcement comes as Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan faces domestic unrest over the arrests of two Armenian Apostolic Church bishops and a prominent businessman, who stand accused of plotting a coup.<\/p>\n Stephen Doughty, the UK minister of state for Europe and North America, was briefed during a meeting on Armenia\u2019s \u201congoing democratic transformation,\u201d<\/em> according to officials. The enhanced partnership is expected to expand security cooperation and attract British investment.<\/p>\n This summer, Armenia was shaken by mass protests following the government\u2019s stand-off with Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan and Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan, who accused Pashinyan of betraying national interests in dealings with Azerbaijan.<\/p>\n
