The Ukrainian leader has claimed there should be tougher penalties if no peace talks happen<\/strong><\/p>\n Ukraine\u2019s Vladimir Zelensky has urged stronger sanctions against Russia if no three-way meeting is held between him, US President Donald Trump, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The statement followed a call between Zelensky and Trump on Saturday, one day after the US leader met with Putin in Alaska without Ukraine\u2019s participation.<\/p>\n Trump described his talks with Putin, which focused on ending the Ukraine conflict, as \u201cwarm,\u201d<\/em> and said the two leaders had \u201cagreed on a lot.\u201d<\/em> He added that the sides were \u201cpretty close to the end\u201d<\/em> of the conflict, but that \u201cUkraine has to agree\u201d<\/em> to any peace deal. The US leader also said he would attend a possible three-way summit, stating, \u201cThey both want me there, and I\u2019ll be there.\u201d<\/em> The Kremlin has not confirmed any such format. Putin has said a trilateral meeting is possible but stressed that certain \u201cconditions for meeting must be created.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n Recounting his conversation with Trump in a post on X on Saturday, Zelensky wrote that\u00a0\u201csanctions are an effective tool.\u201d<\/em> They \u201cshould be strengthened if there is no trilateral meeting\u201d<\/em> or if Russia tries to evade what in his opinion is\u00a0\u201can honest end to the war,\u201d<\/em> he added. <\/p>\n UK and EU leaders issued a joint statement on Saturday saying they \u201cstand ready to uphold the pressure on Russia\u201d<\/em> and would keep strengthening sanctions and economic measures until there is a \u201cjust and lasting peace.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
