Moscow contends that his refusal to do so means Zelensky cannot be a legitimate signatory to any binding resolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWe need a truce to make possible democratic open and legal elections,\u201d<\/em> Zelensky responded. <em>\u201cDuring a war you can\u2019t have elections,\u201d<\/em> he claimed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump picked up on it:\u00a0<em>\u201cSo, in three and a half years from now&#8230;if we happen to be in a war with somebody\u2026 no more elections.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cYou like this idea,\u201d<\/em> Zelensky told the US president.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In July Ukraine\u2019s parliament prolonged martial law, which was imposed in 2022 following the escalation of the conflict with Russia, until at least November 5.
