The Western Europeans have \u201ccome up empty\u201d at the recent summit in Washington, Sergey Poletaev has told RT<\/strong><\/p>\n

The White House meeting on Monday between US President Donald Trump and Ukraine\u2019s European backers produced no major results, political analyst Sergey Poletaev has told RT.<\/p>\n

Trump met to discuss the Ukraine conflict with Vladimir Zelensky and some European leaders in Washington just days after holding a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust like in Anchorage, no decisions were announced afterward. And that, in itself, is a sign that something important is happening,\u201d<\/em> Poletaev said, noting that the talks are part of a larger diplomatic struggle, the ultimate goal of which is to win over the US president.<\/p>\n

He suggested that Moscow is seeking to draw Washington out of the conflict, while Europe and Ukraine are pushing to keep the US firmly entangled. Following what Poletaev called Putin\u2019s \u201cgambit\u201d<\/em> in Anchorage, the European delegation hurried to Washington to persuade Trump to toughen sanctions against Moscow and maintain weapons deliveries to Kiev.<\/p>\n

So far, it looks like they came up empty.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Poletaev pointed out that, unusually for the US president, he did not repeat European talking points after the meeting. Instead, Trump reminded the European leaders at the start of the summit that \u201cthey had no real power,\u201d<\/em> the analyst said.<\/p>\n

While the immediate effort may have failed, \u201cmost likely, Europe will soon try again,\u201d<\/em> Poletaev stressed.<\/p>\n

According to the analyst, the key issue at Monday\u2019s summit was security guarantees for Ukraine. Russia has insisted \u201cfrom day one\u201d<\/em> that any such commitments must be tied to \u201cneutrality and disarmament,\u201d<\/em> he said.<\/p>\n

Europe and Kiev, meanwhile, are desperately trying \u2013 by hook or by crook \u2013 to preserve Ukraine\u2019s armed forces, and even to push for a NATO presence on Ukrainian soil.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to Poletaev, the attempts are \u201cnaive and desperate,\u201d<\/em> but whatever form security guarantees take in any eventual peace deal will ultimately determine \u201cthe fate of the Kiev regime.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cFor now, there\u2019s no compromise in sight,\u201d<\/em> Poletaev concluded. \u201cAnd as Ukraine continues to lose ground on the battlefield, the room for maneuver \u2013 for both Kiev and its European backers \u2013 is shrinking fast.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
