He noted, however, that he does not want to see China as one of the guarantors upholding peace.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFirst, China did not help us stop this war from the very beginning,\u201d<\/em> Zelensky said, adding that Beijing <em>\u201cdid nothing\u201d<\/em> to prevent the secession of Crimea, which overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in a public referendum in 2014. He stressed, however, that these guarantees should be <em>\u201cequal\u201d<\/em> and never be aimed against Russia.<\/p>\n<p>China has positioned itself as a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict and has refused to join sanctions against Russia. It has called on both sides to hold peace talks while suggesting that one of the reasons for hostilities has been NATO expansion.
